Crypto Recovery Scam Involving Fake RCMP Logo Targets Nanaimo Victim
Fraudsters in Canada have adopted a new tactic to lure victims into crypto recovery scams, this time using the logo of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to lend credibility to their scheme. A Nanaimo resident fell prey to the scam after initially losing money through a fake online job offer involving cryptocurrency and stock trading.
The victim was instructed to deposit $5,000 via a crypto ATM to secure the purported job opportunity. After the payment was made, communication ceased—a hallmark of such fraudulent schemes. Months later, the victim encountered an online notice bearing RCMP branding, urging victims of crypto fraud to come forward. Upon responding, they were contacted by an individual posing as a crypto recovery lawyer, who claimed to have discovered $60,000 in profits tied to the victim's name.
Authorities warn of a rising trend in crypto recovery scams, where criminals exploit victims' desperation to recoup losses. The use of official-looking branding and false identities underscores the need for heightened vigilance in the digital asset space.
